Customized Community Leadership Programs
A topic of continual discussion by leaders, particularly in rural areas, is that of the limited number of available, equipped, and capable citizens willing to step forward to assume leadership roles serving on city council; city/county, school, church, civic and other boards; committees and projects. This is becoming quite concerning to local, rural leaders as many are serving on multiple boards to accommodate various capacities and/or they are ready to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders. The question then remains, how to engage new people into these positions and how do we help them feel comfortable with serving.
The overall outcomes goals of any Leadership Program should be to: 1) increase human capacity by developing individual leadership skills; 2) increase social capacity creating awareness of local, county and/or regional issues, as well as, state, regional and local resources and processes; 3) increase cultural capacity by examining assets that give communities/counties a unique sense of place; 4) create a culture of collaboration through nurturing group dynamics and building a network of relationships with current participants, past and present leaders; 5) provide an opportunity for each year’s participants to incorporate and implement all they have learned into a collaborative class capstone community development, community betterment project and 6) provide opportunities for participants to critically consider, engage in discussion and take all they have learned and apply possible solutions to real-life issues facing their community or area.
